How committed are you to your professional development? It could be a new job, a promotion, or finally joining the organization you’ve wanted to join for years. Most professionals will talk a lot about what they say they want, but do nothing about it. The two main challenges that professionals and executives face are that they don’t know how to achieve their goals or they are afraid of the sacrifices required to achieve them. With so much information available online, it’s relatively easy to get a general idea of how to begin a project. However, beginning a project, job search, or business isn’t usually the problem. The challenges come in actually developing and executing the strategies and tactics necessary to complete your mission. This is when issues with follow through, fear, doubt, and worry show up. Overcoming fear will help you achieve professional success.
What if you weren’t afraid to ask for a raise, pursue a promotion, or even quit your job? What would happen to your life? For many professionals, this means earning more money and being more satisfied at work. So, what is it that makes it so difficult to overcome fear? Perhaps you don’t know anyone who has succeeded at what you’re attempting. Everyone in your life may tell you that your goal is unattainable. You may lack a solid plan and the necessary support to see it through. Whatever has held you back in the past does not have to dictate your future. You can apply these strategies to overcome fear in a variety of situations throughout your career!
Get Support
You must have a strong support system to keep you motivated and assist you in new and creative ways. You are not required to do everything yourself! Many professionals have lofty ambitions, but when they’re already overburdened, adding another task to their plate can seem like a nightmare. Fear quickly takes over, and they give up on themselves. Friends and family are great people to talk to about your goals, but their advice can often be counterproductive if they lack relevant experience. Talking to a mentor or career coach can help put things into perspective and be extremely beneficial.
Be Prepared
Do you have a complete understanding of the skills and qualifications required for the new position you’re pursuing? Are you ready to nail an interview? Do you have the knowledge and skills required to complete the tasks associated with your ideal job? The vast majority of people “wing it” through life. They wish and hope for things without taking the necessary steps to achieve success. The ability to develop and execute a realistic plan is a valuable skill that can yield positive results. Planning, brainstorming, and preparation also help to reduce anxiety about taking action.
Embrace Uncertainty
What do you think about when you don’t know all of the answers or how things will turn out? Most life science professionals would respond with a mix of concern, anxiety, and fear. It’s natural to be scared and have doubts, but you don’t have to let that stop you from having the career and life you want. Accepting and embracing uncertainty is one of the most difficult tasks. Having faith and knowing you are prepared for situations can help you overcome fear.
How serious are you about achieving your objectives? If you are determined to achieve them, knowing how to confront your fears will help you every step of the way. Concentrate on getting help, being prepared, and accepting the uncertainty of the situation. You don’t have to waste time fantasizing about what you want; you can start making it a reality right now. What are your current fears that you can confront?
