Have you noticed that most people are in a state of flux? Looking for another job, moving to a new place, or starting a business are some common examples. Change is happening all around us, and considering ways to proactively plan for success is one of the smartest things you can do. Moving through transitions used to be very hard for me. I love routines (it may sound silly I know) and I didn’t like monkey wrenches being thrown in my plans. But as I got older, I learned that resisting or trying to control change is impossible and a waste of time.
Now as a coach and consultant, my main job is helping people and companies get from where they are, to where they want to be. There are some things you can do to reach your goals, even during periods of uncertainty or change. Here are 10 secrets to moving through transitions, faster!
1. Know what you want
If you’re feeling confused, stuck, or lost it’s probably because you don’t know what you want. Or it’s possible that you don’t feel strongly enough about it. Get clear on exactly what you want to achieve!
2. Understand what resources you need
What are the skills and requirements necessary for the position you want? Are you prepared for an interview and able to complete the tasks on the job? Understanding what tools and resources you need set you up for success.
3. Plan how to get there
Planning is fundamental and can help save you a lot of time, energy, and money. Doing the right things out of order can be extremely frustrating, because you feel like you should be making progress but aren’t. Spend time dedicated to working on your plan.
4. Organize your calendar
How are you spending your time? Most people are moving aimlessly from task to task or trying to handle the crisis of the day. Schedule the things that will move you forward, sync it to your phone, and stick to it! If something isn’t on your calendar it’s easy to forget or not keep the commitment.
5. Create systems
Structure = Freedom! Even successful people who like “taking life as it comes” or “doing things differently every time” have systems to get things done. The most spontaneous businessman still has meetings.
6. Take action everyday
Momentum leads to success. It usually takes a lot of action on your part to facilitate some change. If you want a new job, spend at least 30 minutes daily looking for positions. If you want to grow your business, research new prospects everyday.
7. Move through the fear
At some point you’re going to wonder, ‘Can I really do this?’ ‘I don’t have the time, money, or brains to make this work.’ This is fear showing up to keep you in the same place. To get something you never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done. Are you aligning yourself with fear or faith?
8. Network strategically
Whatever your goal is, the overwhelming odds are that you’ll need help to get there. Research shows that the people with the most personal contact to decision makers are usually hired for jobs and win business. One of the best ways to position your self for success is to get out and meet more people.
9. Work on your mindset
What do you think when you hear the word mindset? Your mindset includes your thoughts and beliefs about yourself and goals. It is probably having a large effect on what you’re experiencing in your life and career. Knowing the right strategy or tactics aren’t helpful if you’re buying into limiting beliefs and focused on stories from the past.
10. Get support
I’m a recovering Lone Ranger, who tried to do everything myself. You don’t have to go it alone! So many professionals have ambitious goals, but when you’re already overworked adding something else to your plate can be a nightmare. Fear quickly sets in and they quit on themselves. Set up a support system.
Are you going through a major life transition? I’ve experienced my share of job changes, cross country moves, and growing businesses. Your thoughts, beliefs, and actions during this time will make a big impact on your results. When moving through transitions your speed and ability to make it to the other side depend on YOU! Which one of these secrets can you use to create success for yourself?
